A general term for a disease of the human immune system that is sexually transmitted. Also known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

由来

爱之病，由“爱之”和“病”两部分构成，而“爱之”是音译自英语的 “AIDS” (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome 的缩写)。
爱之病由人类免疫缺乏病毒 (Human immunodeficiency virus，简称 HIV) 通过性接触、输血或母婴传播等途径感染人体所致。病人会出现免疫功能低下、超过正常体温的轻微发烧、慢性腹泻和恶性肿瘤等症状，致死率高。
1981年，爱之病首先在美国被发现。
自1985年发现首起病例，新加坡政府发起了爱之病行动小组 (Action For AIDS)，依靠民众的合作和医疗保健系统，至 2018 年已将新增病例降至 313 人。

ETYMOLOGY

The Mandarin name “爱之病” is a combination of the Mandarin terms “爱之” and “病”, with the former being the transliteration of the English term “AIDS” (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome).
AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which is transmitted sexually, by blood transfusion or from mother-to-child. Patients will present symptoms such as a weakened immune function, a mild fever above body temperature, chronic diarrhoea and malignant tumours. AIDS has a high mortality rate.
AIDS was first discovered in the United States of America in 1981.
Since the discovery of the first case of AIDS in 1985, the Singapore government has launched Action For AIDS; in 2018, the number of newly diagnosed AIDS cases had been reduced to 313 with the cooperation of members of the public and the support of the healthcare system.
