  • 推事是主持推事法庭的司法官员。
  • 推事和国家法院的地方法官及主簿官一样,都由新加坡司法服务部(Singapore Judicial Services)监督和管控。
  • 推事在处理民事案件与刑事案件上有初审裁决权力。推事庭有权听讼最长监禁不超过五年,或可以罚款了事的刑事案件。至于民事案件,推事能审判罚款不超过新币60,000的案件。
  • 推事一职设立于1823年。当时的英国殖民地政府于每年的元旦都会任命12名推事,任期皆一年。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The magistrate is the judicial officer who presides over the Magistrates’ Court.
  • Magistrates, together with district judges and registrars of the State Court, are legal service officers and are under the supervision and control of the Singapore Judicial Services. .
  • The magistrate has first instance judicial powers (hearing cases for the first time) in handling civil and criminal cases. The Magistrates’ Court can preside over criminal cases with a maximum imprisonment of five years or punishable with a fine. For civil cases, the magistrate can hear cases where the claim does not exceed $60,000 in value.
  • The post of the magistrate was created in 1823. At that time, the British colonial government would appoint 12 magistrates on the first day of each year for a one-year term.
