释义

动词

  1. 兜风。
  2. 到国外旅行或度假。

DEFINITION

Verb

  1. To go for a ride.
  2. To travel or go on a vacation abroad.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The original meaning of “吃风” is to go for a ride, but its meaning was later extended to include travelling and going on a vacation.
  • It is believed there are two possible origins of the term   “吃风”:
  1. The Mandarin term “吃风” is a paraphrase of the Malay term makan angin. In Malay, makan means to chew and swallow, while angin means wind. The term makan angin means to go for a ride or go on a vacation. When the words makan and angin are literally translated into Mandarin, they form the term “吃风” (literally “eat wind”).
  2. The term originated from dialects. In Singapore and Malaysia, the terms “吃风” or “食风” are used in Hokkien to refer to going on a vacation, which can mean travelling to the countryside for fresh air, play, joyrides and so on.
