  • 明古连街是与桥北路(North Bridge Road)平行的第五条主要街道。
  • 明古连街的命名是为了纪念莱佛士爵士(Sir Stamford Raffles)在 19 世纪初担任苏门答腊(Sumatra)明古连的总督。
  • 1825 年至 1828 年之间,从苏门答腊来到狮城的明古连回教徒在此建了明古连清真寺(Masjid Bencoolen)。
  • 1885 年,这条街上也建了一座桥,名为 “明古连街桥”(Bencoolen Street Bridge),横跨梧槽水道(Rochor Canal),将明古连街与惹兰勿刹(Jalan Besar)连接起来。

  • Bencoolen Street is the fifth major road that runs parallel to North Bridge Road.
  • Bencoolen Street was named to commemorate Sir Stamford Raffles who served as the Governor of Bencoolen in Sumatra in the early 19th century.
  • Between 1825 and 1828, Bencoolen Muslims from Sumatra came to Singapore and built the Masjid Bencoolen mosque along Bencoolen Street.
  • In 1885, the Bencoolen Street Bridge was built on this road. The bridge spanned Rochor Canal and connected Bencoolen Street to Jalan Besar.
  • Notable buildings along Bencoolen Street include the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Sim Lim Square, and Albert Complex. In 2017, Bencoolen MRT Station started operations.

In addition to providing benches for pedestrians to rest, there are also about 125 bicycle parking lots along this road.
  • Nan Hua Girls School was originally situated along this road. After a few decades, the main school building was relocated to Adis Road and the original building at Bencoolen Street was converted to a branch school.
