DEFINITION

Noun

The southernmost city in Peninsular Malaysia, and the capital of the state Johor. It is currently Malaysia’s second largest city and is only separated from Singapore by the Straits of Johor.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Johor Bahru was founded in the mid-nineteenth century, when the Temenggong of Johor Ibrahim implemented an agricultural development system known as the Kangchu System, and introduced a large Chinese population to settle in the area. Johor Bahru is one of the few cities in Malaysia that retained its Chinese name. The Chinese name “新山” also has its origins from Singapore. In 1844, Tan Kye Soon who established the area Tan Chukang in Singapore, brought his people to settle in Tebrau. He also named that area Tan Chukang. 9 years later, Tanjong Putri was established at the downstream of Tebrau, and was named Johor Bahru (新山). At that time, the Tan Chukang in Singapore was situated in the shores opposite Johor Bahru, near Kranji. As it was created first, it was known as “老山” (old hill), and the new town developing across the straits was named “新山” (new hill).

RELATED INFORMATION

  • The original Malay name for Johor Bahru was Tanjong Putri. In 1855 when Temenggong Ibrahim gained control over the Johor state, he established an office in Johor Bahru, and renamed it Iskandar Putri. When Temenggong Abu Bakar succeeded the position in 1866, he moved the administrative centre from Singapore’s Teluk Belanga to this location and renamed it “Johor Bahru”, meaning new Johor, to differentiate it from the Johor sultanate.
