ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “新生水” is a paraphrase of the English term “NEWater”.
  • The idea of “NEWater” was first proposed in the 1970s, but was officially   rolled out only in August 2002.
  • The Government’s main goal in developing NEWater is to prevent Singapore from facing the problem of water shortage in future.
  • It is expected that NEWater will be able to meet 55% of Singapore’s water supply needs by 2060.
  • Various tests have been conducted on NEWater to ensure its sustainability and safety for consumption.
  • There are three main steps in the production of NEWater: filtration, reverse osmosis and UV disinfection.
  • Singapore currently has five NEWater plants, and the government plans to build a new one in Changi, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. This new plant will replace the first NEWater plant built 20 years ago. By then, NEWater will be able to meet half of the water demand in Singapore.
