由来
- “二十间” 一词源自于福建话 ji chap keng。
- 19 世纪初的美芝路（Beach Road）一代属于临海地段，在莱佛士市镇规划（Raffles Town Plan）中被划分为欧洲人的住宅区。
- 由于当时该路段有20间欧洲人的临海豪华别墅，因此人们便俗称之为 “二十间”。
- 早期的美芝路与峇厘巷（Bali Lane）一带集中贩卖碗碟，人们也因此俗称该地段为 “二十间碗店口”。

早期殖民地时代，美芝路曾是高级住宅区，华人称美芝路为二十间，说的就是当年美芝路上 20 栋豪华的别墅，现在美芝路上还有不少美丽的建筑，如莱佛士大酒店、哈查花蒂玛回教堂等。（《联合早报》，7/4/2001）
