释义

名词

位于新加坡东北部的岛屿,属于本岛以外第二大的岛屿。

DEFINITION

Noun

An island located in the north-eastern waters of Singapore. It is Singapore’s second largest offshore island.

ETYMOLOGY
  • 8km long and 1.5km wide, Pulau Ubin is made up of 5 smaller islands, connected by mangrove swamps in the past.
  • Pulau Ubin’s name originated from the Malay name Pulau Batu Ubin (later abbreviated as Pulau Ubin), meaning “Granite Stone Island”. It was known as ban-gang among the Chinese community. It is also home to Chek Jawa, a protected marine habitat.
  • Visitors may travel to Pulau Ubin via a 15-minute boat ride from the Changi Point Ferry Terminal.
  • According to the 1990 census, there were less than 200 inhabitants on the island. Most of them live in Malay and Chinese villages, and work as fishermen. Due to the limited natural resources such as drinking water, and a lack of basic facilities such as schools and clinics, it is difficult for the islanders to remain self-sufficient.
例句
乌敏岛距离本岛仅是十多分钟的路程,而这短短的十分钟,却彻底将都市和自然分开。(《联合早报》,15/6/2011)
SAMPLE SENTENCE
Pulau Ubin may be just 10 minutes away from the mainland of Singapore, but these mere 10 minutes mark a separation between the city and nature. (Lianhe Zaobao, 15/6/2011)
