释义

名词

印度女性的一种传统服装,以一段长绸布披着肩膀及围着身体。也称莎丽、沙丽、沙里、沙厘、沙利等。

DEFINITION

Noun

A traditional costume for Indian women that covers the shoulders and wraps around the body of the wearer with a long piece of silk. Also known in Mandarin as  “莎丽”, “沙丽”, “沙里”, or “沙利”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “纱丽” is a transliteration of the word sari or saree, which originated from Hindi. It is believed that sari came from Sanskrit (which Hindi descended from), meaning “a long piece of cloth”
  • There are said to be hundreds of ways to wear the sari. According to the customs of different Indian communities, some will drape it on the right shoulder while others will drape it on the left, while some will wrap it under the crotch and others use it to cover the head at the same time. Indian women usually wear silk sari on festive occasions. The sari also has different lengths, usually between five and eight metres long.
  • Although the origin of the sari is unverifiable, ancient Indian pottery relics feature women wearing trousers and wrapping a long piece of cloth around their whole body. This shows that the sari has been worn in India since ancient times.
  • The sari has multiple symbolic meanings in Indian culture. As it is seamless, the sari symbolises purity. Wearing the sari also symbolises adulthood for Indian girls. In addition, the sari is a token of love which Indian women must prepare when they get married, and it demonstrates the financial status of their in-laws.
