ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “讲标准英语运动” is a paraphrase of the English term “Speak Good English Movement”.
  • Former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong launched the Movement on 29 April 2000 with the slogan “Speak Good English, Be Understood”.
  • Although the Speak Good English Movement recognises Singlish as a part of Singaporean culture, its purpose is to increase the proficiency of Standard English among the younger generation, preparing them for effective communication in English with the rest of the world.
