ETYMOLOGY
  • The term “好命” is used in Hokkien, Teochew and Hakka.
  • It can also refer to having good luck, or a person who is blessed.

  • In Hokkien, “好命” also means to be born into a wealthy family, but it can also mean passing away, such as “我的老公去年去好命了” (my husband passed away last year).
  • The GoodLife! Senior Activity Centre in Singapore (also known informally in Mandarin as “快乐中心” or “happiness centre”) was jokingly called “好命中心” (literally “good life centre”) in Hokkien by some seniors. Although some found the term “好命” to be crass and inelegant, the centre’s spokesperson disagrees, asserting that “好命” here refers to “good health and longevity, a rich and fulfilling life, and having plenty of children and grandchildren”.
