ETYMOLOGY
  • In 2006, the BCA established the Accessibility Fund to provide building owners with funds to renovate existing buildings and add essential accessibility features. The total amount of the fund is $40 million.
  • In 1990, the government began to implement the Code on Barrier-Free Accessibility in Buildings. The Accessibility Fund is only for private buildings built before the implementation of the Code. Each development is eligible for up to two applications, and could obtain a grant of up to $300,000.
  • The Fund can be used to cover up to 80% of the construction cost of Basic Accessibility Features, including lifts, toilets on the building's first storey, and signage for such features.
  • The Fund can also be used to construct additional features that are family-friendly or helpful for the disabled, such as accessible family washrooms, Braille signage, and audio guidance systems.
