(Committee on the Standardisation of Street Names in Chinese),正式把红毛桥的名称标准化,称作“宏茂桥”。
  • 宏茂桥新镇是新加坡政府发展的第七个新镇,于1980年完成。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin name “宏茂桥” originated from the Hokkien term ang mo kio (“红毛桥”), where “红毛” (ang mo), literally meaning “red hair”, refers to white people.
  • The name “Ang Mo Kio” is connected to John Turnbull Thomson, who built a bridge over the Kallang River, near the junction of Upper Thomson Road and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1. The local Chinese called this bridge “红毛桥”, which translates to “white man’s bridge”. As a result, the villages around the area came to be known as Ang Mo Kio.
  • In the early days, Ang Mo Kio was home to rubber plantations cultivated by the Hokkiens who lived in the area. Plummeting rubber prices in 1922 and 1932 resulted in a gradual reduction in rubber plantations.
  • In 1969, the Ministry of Culture established the Committee on the Standardisation of Street Names in Chinese, which officially standardised the Mandarin name of Ang Mo Kio from “红毛桥” to “宏茂桥”.
  • Completed in 1980, Ang Mo Kio was the seventh new town built by the Singapore Government.
例句
宏茂桥用福建话念就是番茄,但其实这里从前并不种番茄,而是指一道洋人建的“红毛桥”。(《联合晚报》,20/2/2016)
SAMPLE SENTENCE
Although Ang Mo Kio has the same pronunciation as “tomato” in the Hokkien dialect, tomatoes were not grown in this area in the past. Instead, the name refers to a bridge built by a white man. (Lianhe Wanbao, 20/2/2016)
