释义

名词

位于新加坡东北部的地区。此地区的北,东,西,南边分别以实里达高速公路,中央高速公路,中央集水区以及宏茂桥 (Ang Mo Kio)一道为界。也称红毛桥。

DEFINITION

Noun

An area located in the north-eastern part of Singapore. This area shares boundaries with the Seletar Expressway in the north, the Central Expressway in the east, the Central Catchment in the west, and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 in the south. Also known in Mandarin as "红毛桥".

(The Committee on the Standardisation of Street Names in Chinese),正式把红毛桥的名称标准化,称作宏茂桥。
  • 宏茂桥新镇是新加坡政府发展的第七个新镇,于1980年完成。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin name “宏茂桥” is the transliteration of the Hokkien (Minnan) dialect term “红毛桥”. “红毛” refers to a Caucasian with red hair and blue eyes.
  • The name Ang Mo Kio originated from John Turnbull Thomson, a civil engineer in the Straits Settlements in the 19th century. He built a bridge over the Kallang River, near the junction of Upper Thomson Road and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1. The local Chinese called this bridge “红毛桥”, which translates to the “Caucasian’s bridge”. As a result, the villages around the area came to be known as Ang Mo Kio.
  • Ang Mo Kio used to be home to rubber plantations in the early days, which were cultivated by the Hokkiens who lived in the area. The plummeting prices of rubber in 1922 and 1932 resulted in a gradual reduction in rubber plantations.
  • In 1969, the Ministry of Culture established The Committee on the Standardisation of Street Names in Chinese, which officially standardized the Mandarin name of Ang Mo Kio from “红毛桥” to “宏茂桥”.
  • Completed in 1980, Ang Mo Kio was the seventh new town built by the Singapore government.
例句
宏茂桥用福建话念就是番茄,但其实这里从前并不种番茄,而是指一道洋人建的“红毛桥”。(《联合晚报》, 20/02/2016)
SAMPLE SENTENCE
Although Ang Mo Kio has the same pronunciation as “tomato” in the Hokkien dialect, tomatoes were not grown in this area in the past. Instead, the name refers to the “Caucasian ’s bridge”, which had been built by a Caucasian man. (Lianhe Wanbao, 20/02/2016)
