释义

名词

泛指在沟渠活动或栖息的小鱼。

DEFINITION

Noun

Generally refers to small fishes that inhabit or are active in drains or canals.

ETYMOLOGY
  • In Singapore, longkang fish generally refers to wild guppy, but can also refer to other small fishes such as mosquitofish or molly.
  • “龙沟”(longkang) refers to small roadside drains that are curved or long. Another belief is that it refers to “垄沟” , which means furrows (water trenches between cultivation ridges).
  • During the 1950s and 1960s, guppy species in Singapore, which were mainly divided into wild and domestic types, were popular worldwide. The wild type was commonly referred to as longkang fish.
  • Guppies originated from South America. The fish has a bright appearance with attractive patterns and can survive in sewage.
  • As the guppy is an omnivorous fish, the Singapore government released large quantities of the fish into rivers and drains to control the breeding of mosquitoes since the start of the 20th century.
