ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “平行入口” is a paraphrase of the English term “parallel import”.
  • Parallel imports are original goods and not counterfeits. There is no infringement associated with the goods, as long as they were introduced into the market by the trade mark owner or with their consent.
  • The main parallel imports in Singapore are cars. There are also parallel imports of sundries.
  • For cars, although parallel import is a legal trade activity locally, the importer must first register with the Singapore Customs and submit information related to the imported cars.

SAMPLE SENTENCE
Parallel importers are more actively bringing in car models that have passed Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES) requirements into the local market. Coupled with a reduction in the quotas for Certificate of Entitlement (COE), this has caused COE prices for three major vehicle classes to continue to rise. (Lianhe Zaobao, 7/3/2019)
