  • 本地第一份司法宪章(First Charter of Justice)于1819年2月6日成立,刚好也是新加坡开埠时期。第二份司法宪章于1826年11月27日发布,也在新加坡成立了司法法院(Court of Judicature)。
  • 1868年的最高法院法例(Supreme Court Ordinance 1868)解散了原先的司法法院,成立了海峡殖民地的最高法院(Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements)。
  • 1955年5月2日,Tan Ah Tah先生成为第一位委任于最高法院的新加坡法官。1963年1月5日,黄宗仁(Wee Chong Jin)成为新加坡共和国第一位委任为大法官的亚洲人,这是新加坡司法史上一大突破,因为从1867年以来委任为大法官的一律为英国人。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The First Charter of Justice was established on 6 February 1819, which coincided with the founding of Singapore. The Second Charter of Justice was issued on 27 November 1826, and the Court of Judicature was established.
  • In 1868, the Supreme Court Ordinance 1868 abolished the Court of Judicature and replaced it with the Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements.
  • On 2 May 1955, Mr Tan Ah Tah became the first Singaporean Judge appointed to the Supreme Court. On 5 January 1963, Wee Chong Jin became the first Asian appointed as the first Chief Justice in the Supreme Court of the Republic of Singapore, marking a significant milestone in Singapore’s history, as all the Chief Justices appointed since 1867 were British.
