释义

名词

由糯米制成的粿类食品,因红色的粿皮和印有龟型图案而得名。

DEFINITION

Noun

A snack or pastry (known as kueh) made from glutinous rice. The Mandarin name literally translates as “red tortoise cake”, named after its red-coloured skin made from flour and imprinted with a tortoise pattern.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The term ang ku kueh originated from the Hokkien (Minnan) dialect. It is made of glutinous rice flour, stuffed with sweetened bean paste, peanut paste or grated coconut filling. It is prepared by shaping the dough into an oval shape, dyeing the dough red and imprinting the tortoise pattern with a mould, before steaming it in a steamer.
  • Ang ku kueh signifies auspiciousness, completeness, wealth, longevity (symbolized by the tortoise) and abundant progeny. In general, ang ku kueh is commonly used on the feast days of deities or religious rituals and also in birthday celebrations, baby full-month celebrations, funerals and other Chinese special occasions.
  • Ang ku kueh is also one of the must-have festive foods of the Peranakan (Nonya) community.
