DEFINITION

Noun

A nationwide electronic money transfer service introduced by the Singapore Government, which can be used to pay bills.

ETYMOLOGY
  • “General Interbank Recurring Order” is abbreviated to “GIRO” in English, therefore the term “财路” is the transliteration of GIRO.
  • GIRO is a fund transfer service introduced in 1984. It is a mechanism between billing organisations, customers and the bank. GIRO was launched in conjunction with the “National Campaign to Minimize Cash Transactions” introduced on 14 March 1985. The three-month campaign served three purposes: encourage Singaporeans to receive their salaries from employers via direct transfer to their bank accounts; encourage Singaporeans to pay their bills through GIRO; and to promote the use of Electronic Funds Transfer.
