RELATED INFORMATION

  • Apart from “贼市场”, there were other Mandarin names for the Sungei Road Thieves’ Market, such as “小偷市场” (meaning “petty thieves’ market”, because the goods sold were all stolen), “结霜桥” (meaning “frosted bridge”, because there was formerly an ice factory nearby), “淡水河” (meaning “freshwater river”, because Sungei Road is located on the bank of Rochor River), and “港仔墘” (a colloquial name for Sungei Road). These names all originated from the geographical location of the flea market in the past, although “结霜桥” was used more frequently.
  • During the olden days, the Thieves' Market sold more than just used goods but also a variety of local delicacies.
