释义

名词

地面湿滑且没有冷气设备的菜市场。

DEFINITION

Noun

A market with a wet floor surface and no air-conditioning.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The character “湿” means “wet”, while “巴刹” is the transliteration of the Malay pasar, which means “market”.
  • Wet markets are generally located in public housing estates, allowing residents to conveniently purchase daily necessities as well as raw and cooked food.
  • The produce sold at wet markets include fresh vegetables, fruits, meat and fish. The floor is often wet from the handling of the fresh produce, such as the cleaning and scaling of fish.
  • The products sold at wet markets are noted for their freshness, variety and affordability. Wet markets mostly operate in the mornings, with most stallholders either having sold out their produce or calling it a day by noon.
