Now that Julia Gillian is a middle school “Sixlet” (sixth-grader), life is fundamentally altered. No longer do her teachers coddle her. No longer is recess the carefree pleasure it once was.

Worse than all of this, Julia Gillian’s beloved dog, Bigfoot, is slowing down, which makes her cozy, predictable world feel out of control.

Review

Coping with a new school year can be complicated, especially so for Julia Gillian who has to manage a difficult reading buddy, deal with the fearsome eight graders and spend time with her dog. There just seems to be a cauldron of problems for Julia to deal with!

Written in a captivating manner, this book is suitable for older children, who will be able to empathise with the problems that Julia faces as she stumbles her way through sixth grade and realises that sometimes in life, the variables just cannot be controlled.
