• Bukit Ho Swee was named in honour of Tay Ho Swee, a 19th century merchant. It is said that this was the first time a location in Singapore was named after a Chinese person.
• In the early 20th century, Bukit Ho Swee was one of the most densely populated slums in Singapore, with poor hygiene conditions and no water or electricity supply.
• The Bukit Ho Swee slums experienced three fires. After the 1961 Bukit Ho Swee fire, the Government rapidly built new flats on the site of the fire. The area has since been developed into the Bukit Ho Swee residential estate, complete with amenities and facilities.
• The residential estate comprises an area of 38.4 hectares, and is today an iconic part of Singapore's housing development history.

The Bukit Ho Swee Fire was jointly presented by the Marine Parade Cantonese Opera Troupe and the Joo Chiat Teochew Opera Troupe of the Marine Parade Community Art & Culture Club. The opera tells the story of the victims who lost their homes in the 1961 Bukit Ho Swee Fire, describing how they supported each other and overcame the odds with assistance from the government.
