DEFINITION

Noun

Dedicated lanes for public buses on roads with multiple lanes.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “巴士道” is both a transliteration and paraphrase of the English term “bus lane”, and is also an abbreviation of “bus priority lane”.
  • Bus lanes were established to allow buses to travel faster and more smoothly during peak hour traffic. In Singapore, the bus lane is the leftmost lane.
  • The bus lane scheme was first introduced by the Land Transport Authority in the 1970s.
  • Bus lanes are demarcated by yellow lines. Other vehicles are not allowed to drive on bus lanes during the following periods: Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 9:30 am and 5 pm to 8 pm.
  • In 2005, the Land Transport Authority launched full-day bus lanes. Full-day bus lanes are demarcated by yellow and red lines. Other vehicles are not allowed to drive on these bus lanes during the following periods: Monday to Saturday from 7:30 am to 11 pm.
  • It is illegal for other vehicles to drive on bus lanes during the specified hours. Motorists who do so can be fined $130.
  • Bus lanes have improved bus speeds by 7% to 16%.
  • Although bicycles, emergency service vehicles, police cars and other private buses (such as factory buses, or school buses) are allowed to use bus lanes, they cannot stop or pick up passengers in bus lanes.
SAMPLE SENTENCE
