ETYMOLOGY
  • Happy World was officially opened in May 1937. It was developed by George Lee Geok Eng, the owner of Nanyang Siang Pau.
  • Happy World, New World, and Great World Amusement Parks made up the Three Worlds in Singapore.
  • In addition to a dance hall that could accommodate 300 couples, Happy World also had an indoor stadium that could sit 10,000 spectators, which was then the largest in Singapore and Malaysia.
  • The stadium hosted many significant international basketball, badminton, boxing, and wrestling matches.
  • In 1964, Eng Wah Organisation took over the park and renamed it as Gay World Amusement Park in 1966, replacing the original name “Happy World”.
  • In the 1970s and 1980s, Gay World Amusement Park gradually lost its former glory due to its ageing facilities. It was officially closed in 2000 and was the last of the Three Worlds to be demolished.
