ETYMOLOGY
  • Known as the largest bird park in Asia, Singapore’s Bird Park opened in 1971. Located in the Jurong area, the park houses a total of 3,500 birds and close to 400 species, some of which are critically endangered. The Jurong Bird Park was the first park to have a bird hospital in the Asia Pacific region.
  • The construction of the Jurong Bird Park can be attributed to former Minister of Finance Dr Goh Keng Swee. In 1967, Dr Goh visited the Rio Aviary in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, and came up with the idea of building a bird park in Singapore. As Singapore progressed toward industrialisation and urbanisation, the bird park could be a place for Singaporeans to relax and enjoy nature.
