  • 当店的“当”，指的是典当。典当指用物品抵押，借钱贷款。据文献记载，当店和典当业早在1500多年前就已存在。
  • 建国以来，新加坡的当店和典当业日益发达，现已成为新加坡信用体系中的一个重要组成部分。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The character “当” in “当店” means “to pawn”, which means to deposit an object with a pawnbroker in exchange for money. According to records, pawnshops and pawn businesses have been in existence as early as 1,500 years ago.
  • Since its founding, Singapore’s pawnshops and pawn businesses have become increasingly developed and have now become an important part of Singapore’s credit system.

  • In ancient China, pawnshops had many names, such as “质” or “质库” in the Tang Dynasty, and “典” and “典库” in the Song Dynasty. By the Ming Dynasty, there were already more than a dozen names for such shops. The term “当铺” eventually became the generic term for pawnbroker shops.
