Noun

A constituency in which an individual candidate runs for Member of Parliament (MP).

由来
  • 在单选区里,每个政党只可以派出一名候选人,竞选国会议席。也称单议席选区。
  • 按照新加坡国会选举法(Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap. 218)第8A(1A) 条要求,在任何时候,全国至少需有8个单选区。
  • 除了单选区,新加坡也有集选区制度,集选区可竞选多过一个议席。
  • 1991年,新加坡全国有21个单选区。
  • 1996年,全国的单选区数量减少至9个。
  • 2020年,全国的单选区数量增加,共有14个单选区。
ETYMOLOGY
  • In a SMC, each political party may only field one single candidate to run for Parliament. SMCs are also known as single-MP constituencies. 

  • According to Section 8A(1A) of the Parliamentary Elections Act (Cap. 218), there must be at least eight SMCs in the country at any given time.

  • In addition to SMCs, Singapore also has Group Representation Constituencies (GRC), in which more than one candidate runs for Parliament.

  • In 1991, Singapore had a total of 21 SMCs.

  • The total number of SMCs were reduced to nine in 1996.

  • In 2020, the total number of SMCs in the country has increased to a total of 14.
