Noun
A house raised on supports above land or water.
It is said that stilt houses have been around since Singapore’s founding. Before public housing (HDB flats) was built, stilt houses were the traditional residences of many Malays and indigenous people in Singapore.
Stilt houses were built to deal with the tropical climate in Singapore. These houses were raised on supports approximately one metre above the ground, which provided better ventilation and prevented snakes or other insects from entering the house. During the rainy season, stilt houses were also less likely to be affected by any rise in water levels.
