ETYMOLOGY
  • The term “制水 originated from a Cantonese paraphrase of the English term “water rationing”.
  • In the 1960s, Singapore experienced extremely dry climate while its population continued to increase, leading to a rapid rise in water consumption.
  • The Government implemented water rationing exercises for ten months between 23 April 1963 and 28 February 1964.
  • During the nationwide Save Water Campaign conducted in 1995, the PUB held a water rationing exercise for the first time which lasted for six days.
  • The aim was to promote awareness of Singapore’s water shortage issue among Singaporeans, and remind them of the importance of saving water.
