释义

名词

厦门街(Amoy Street)的俗称。也称“义学口”、“观音庙后”。

DEFINITION

Noun

A colloquial name for Amoy Street. Also known in Chinese as “义学口” or “观音庙后”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “妈祖宫后” originated from the Hokkien term ma zhor keng au.
  • Amoy Street runs parallel to Telok Ayer Street, which is known for Thian Hock Keng, a temple with almost two centuries of history.
  • Thian Hock Keng is mainly dedicated to the worship of Mazu (“妈祖”), also known as the Holy Mother of Heaven (“天上圣母”). However, its rear hall is used for the worship of Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin). Hence the temple is known both as “妈祖宫” (“Mazu temple”) and “观音庙” (“Guanyin temple”).”
  • As Amoy Street runs behind Thian Hock Keng, it was colloquially known as “妈祖宫后” (“behind the Mazu temple”) or “观音庙后” (“behind the Guanyin temple”) in the early days.
例句
以旧时俗称来看,天福宫是“妈祖宫”,后面的厦门街称为“妈祖宫后”,天福宫门口原本有个戏台,戏台后面的史坦利街就是“戏台后”。(《联合早报》, 9/7/2020)
SAMPLE SENTENCE
Speaking of old colloquial names, Thian Hock Keng was “妈祖宫” (“Mazu temple”), and Amoy Street behind it was “妈祖宫后” (“behind the Mazu temple”). There was originally an opera stage facing the entrance of Thian Hock Keng, and Stanley Street behind the stage was known as “戏台后” (“behind the opera stage”). (Lianhe Zaobao, 9/7/2020)
