Noun

A jetty located along the coastal canal at East Coast Park.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “勿洛” is the transliteration of the English term “Bedok”.
  • It is believed that there are two possible origins of the name “Bedok”. One belief is that the term came from the Malay word bedoh, meaning “drum”. In Singapore's early days, Malays would use drums to announce important news in their villages. Mosques would also sound the drums five times per day as a reminder of the time for prayers. Another belief is that it originated from the Malay word biduk, meaning “small fishing boat”, as the coasts of Bedok were lined with small fishing boats.
  • The 250-metre Bedok Jetty was built in 1966. It was originally a private jetty and was later taken over by the Ministry of Defence for military purposes.
  • In 1988, the Public Utilities Board allocated $1.1 million to upgrade Bedok Jetty, which has been opened to public ever since. Today, Bedok Jetty is a popular venue for cycling, fishing, and other leisure activities.
