A Chinese course of a lower difficulty level than the ordinary Chinese course, in terms of text, vocabulary and examinations.

由来
  • 英语 “Chinese Language ‘B’ （CLB）” 的意译。
  • 1999 年，由时任副总理李显龙领导的华文审查委员会（Chinese Language （CL）Review Committee）提出了提供华文 B 课程的建议。此课程于 2001 年正式推出。
  • 华文 B 课程强调实际的沟通技能，帮助面临学习困难的学生将华文学到一定的程度，并且维持他们对于此语文和文化的兴趣。
  • 相较于普通华文，华文 B 课程的考试主要把比重放在听和说方面。华文 B 课程的课文较简单，学生必须学习的词汇也较少。
  • 如果学生在小六离校考试（Primary School Leaving Examinations）中，在华文科目考取 C 或以下的得分，将能够选修华文 B 课程。
  • 学校也可以依据个别学生的学习情况，或者学生的中学华文考试得分，考虑是否接受学生修读华文 B 课程的申请。
  • 华文 B 课程能帮助母语较弱的学生达到被初级学院与大学录取所需的基本母语要求。
  • 学生能够从中学一年级至高中时期选修华文 B 课程。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “华文B课程” is a paraphrase of the English term “Chinese Language ‘B’ Syllabus (CL‘B’)”.
  • In 1999, the Chinese Language (CL) Review Committee, led by then Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, recommended to offer the CL‘B’ course. This course was officially launched in 2001.
  • CL‘B’ emphasises practical communication skills to help students who are facing learning difficulties to attain a certain proficiency level in the Chinese language, while maintaining their interest in Chinese language and culture.
  • Compared to the ordinary Chinese course, the CL‘B’ examination focuses mainly on listening and speaking. The text of the CL‘B’ course is also simpler and students need to learn less vocabulary.
  • A student who scores a grade of C or below for Chinese Language in the Primary School Leaving Examinations can opt for the CL‘B’ course.
  • The school can also decide whether to accept the CL‘B’ application of a student based on the student’s learning situation or secondary school Chinese Language examination scores.
  • CL‘B’ can help students who are weaker in their mother tongue language to achieve the basic Chinese language requirements for admission to junior colleges and universities.
  • Students can opt for the CL‘B’ course from secondary one to post-secondary.
