• Fort Canning Park boasts a long history. The gold ornaments, Chinese porcelain artefacts and architecture discovered by modern archaeologists at the park can be traced back to the fourteenth century. Since Singapore was a trade transit point along the Maritime Silk Road during the Middle Ages, archaeologists also found a large number of ceramic artifacts from the Yuan Dynasty in Fort Canning Park.
• The ancient royal palace once resided in Fort Canning Park. The general public could not enter the area without permission, so it was also known as “皇家山” (Literally translated as “Royal Hill”) and “Forbidden Hill” (translated from the Malay name Bukit Larangan).
• Singapore’s first botanical garden was established in Fort Canning Park, occupying an area of 19 hectares.
• “Pancur Larangan” (Forbidden Spring) in Fort Canning Park was said to be where the women of the royal household bathed in ancient times.
• In conjunction with the 200th anniversary of Singapore’s founding, Pancur Larangan was rebuilt during the Fort Canning Park restoration project.

With covered escalators leading to the hilltop, family-friendly recreational facilities and nine restored historic gardens, Fort Canning Park officially opened its door to visitors this morning (27 May) in conjunction with the 200th anniversary of Singapore’s founding, after more than a year of restoration works. • As the founder of the harbour city of Singapore, Sir Stamford Raffles built a house on Fort Canning Hill in 1822. Due to his sheer fondness for this place, Sir Raffles even asked to be buried with the Malay Royal Family, who used to live on Fort Canning Hill, after his death.
