售卖金银首饰的商店。也称金店、金铺。
Noun
A shop that sells gold and silver jewellery. Also known in Mandarin as "金店" or "金铺".
It is said that the Teochews often called these goldsmith shops “金庄”.
In the 1930s, there used to be many goldsmith shops along South Bridge Road in Chinatown. Hence, the street used to be known as “金铺街” (goldsmith street).
Each of these shops would hire a goldsmith who was responsible for making or altering the gold jewellery. In the olden days, these shops mainly sold gold and silver jewellery, pearls and jades.
In those days, some people would also deposit their savings in goldsmith shops or pawn shops that they trusted. They did not deposit their money in banks because they lacked a good understanding of these institutions and were worried that banks would be unreliable.
