DEFINITION

Noun

A former amusement park located in the vicinity of Kim Seng Road, River Valley Road and Zion Road.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Completed in 1929, Great World Amusement Park was built on the site of a former Chinese cemetery, and aimed to provide entertainment and leisure activities for the low-income families living nearby.
  • The initial response from the public was underwhelming, and in the early 1940s, the amusement park was sold to Shaw Brothers Pictures International Limited.
  • After the Second World War, Shaw Brothers developed Great World into an integrated entertainment venue and named it “Great World Amusement Park” (“大世界游艺场”).
  • Great World Amusement Park had four cinemas, one nightclub and two restaurants. It hosted two trade fairs yearly, and became a renowned destination for dining and entertainment.
  • Over the years, with more entertainment and leisure alternatives becoming available, Great World gradually declined in popularity and shut down most of its operations in March 1964.
  • After 1964, only the cinemas and restaurants remained open, until they too were closed in 1978.
