  • 独立桥于 1956 年 8 月 17 日由时任首席部长的林有福主持开幕。
  • 独立桥的长度为 2000 英尺,宽度为 65 英尺,是连接新加坡东部与市中心的主要交通干线,建造成本为新币 607 万元。
  • 1950年代,加冷、芽笼(Geylang)和蒙巴登路(Mountbatten Road)常发生交通阻塞。为了缓解路况,加冷盆地发展理事会 (Kallang Basin Development Committee) 便提议建造能连接加冷和美芝路(Beach Road)的沿海公路与桥。
  • 独立桥由殖民地公共工程部(Public Works Department)的 R.J.Hollis-Bee 所设计,并由当时通讯与工程部部长(Minister for Communications and Works)Francis Thomas 命名,名字象征着新加坡朝向独立的憧憬。

ETYMOLOGY
  • Merdeka Bridge was opened on 17 August 1956 by then Chief Minister Lim Yew Hock.
  • Merdeka Bridge is 2,000 feet long and 65 feet wide. It is the main transport route connecting the eastern part of Singapore and the city centre. . Its construction cost was S$6.07 million.
  • In the 1950s, there were frequent traffic jams in Kallang, Geylang, and at Mountbatten Road. To alleviate congestion, the Kallang Basin Development Committee proposed building a coastal road and bridge to connect Kallang and Beach Road.
  • Merdeka Bridge was designed by R. J. Hollis-Bee of the colonial era Public Works Department, and was named by Francis Thomas, then Minister for Communications and Works. The name symbolises Singapore’s aspiration for independence.
  • In 2002, the National Heritage Board marked Merdeka Bridge as a Historic Site, and the plaque on Merdeka Bridge documents its history and significance.
