ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “新生水” is a paraphrase of the English term “NEWater”.
  • The idea of “NEWater” was first proposed in the 1970s, but was officially   rolled out only in August 2002.
  • The Government’s main goal in developing NEWater is to prevent Singapore from facing the problem of water shortage in future.
  • It is expected that NEWater will be able to meet 55% of Singapore’s water supply needs by 2060.
  • Various tests have been conducted on NEWater to ensure its sustainability and safety for consumption.
  • There are three main steps in the production of NEWater: filtration, reverse osmosis and UV disinfection.
