Noun

One of the secondary school courses in Singapore, which consists of the Academic course and the Technical course. Also known in Mandarin as “普通课程” or “普通班”.

由来

英语 “Normal Course” 的意译。
自 1980 年，新加坡政府全面在中小学执行了分流制度，中学课程分为特别、快捷和普通源流。
普通课程另分为普通学术课程（Normal Academic Course）和普通工艺课程（Normal Technical Course）。
修读普通课程的学生如果符合要求，可通过科目编班计划（Subject-Based Banding）修读一些快捷课程的科目。
虽然在科目方面，修读普通学术课程的学生与快捷课程的学生大致相同，但课程在内容的广度及深度方面却有较低的要求。修读普通工艺课程的学生，科目则是以技术或实践为中心。
修读普通课程的中四学生都需要考新加坡剑桥普通教育证书（初级水准）会考，简称 N 水准会考。N 水准考试后，普通学术课程的学生有机会选择继续修读多一年，为 O 水准考试做准备，也可通过理工学院预科班报读理工学院，或到工艺教育学院继续学业。普通工艺课程的学生考了 N 水准考试后，可升读工艺教育学院的技术职业教育。

ETYMOLOGY

The Mandarin term “普通课程” is a paraphrase of the English term “Normal course”.
Since 1980, the Singapore government has fully implemented streaming in primary and secondary schools. In secondary schools, students are streamed into Special, Express, and Normal courses.
The Normal course consists of the Normal (Academic) and the Normal (Technical) courses.
Through Subject-Based Banding, students in the Normal course are allowed to take certain subjects from the Express course if they meet the subject requirements.
Students enrolled in both the Normal (Academic) course and the Express course have similar subjects, but the Normal course has lower requirements in terms of the breadth and depth of content. Students enrolled in the Normal (Technical) course focus on technical or hands-on practice.
Secondary four students in the Normal course are required to sit for the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Normal Level (GCE N-Level) examinations.After the N-Level examination, Normal (Academic) students have the choice to continue one more year of study in preparation for the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (GCE O-Level) examination. They can also enrol in the Polytechnic Foundation Programme to apply to Polytechnics, or continue their studies at the Institute of Technical Education. After taking the N-Level Examination, Normal (Technical) students can enrol in technical vocational education at the Institute of Technical Education.
