• ORNSmen are important members of NS. This mandatory service was first introduced by the British Colonial government in 1954 and revised by the Singapore government in 1967.
• From 1994, the English term was changed from “Reservist” to “ORNSmen”. This is to emphasise the important role ORNSmen play in the first line of defence.
• In Singapore, male citizens and permanent residents at the age of 18 must enlist for NS. After serving 22-24 months of full-time active service, they will convert to be ORNSmen on their “Operationally Ready Date” (ORD).
• In general, the in-camp training cycle for ORNSmen is about 10 years, which consists of 3 stages: In the first to fourth year, they are trained for operational readiness. In the fifth to seventh year, they are trained to improve their operational readiness, and there will be an external evaluation in their seventh year. In the eighth to tenth year, they will be expected to maintain their operational readiness and undergo integrated training.
• To complete the one-year cycle of in-camp training, ORNSmen are expected to attend in-camp training once, from 1 April to 31 March of the following year. The in-camp training duration should not exceed 40 days within one annual cycle.
