• In Mandarin, the name “盛港” means “prosperous harbour”. In the early days, the residents of this area mostly made a living by fishing, or growing pepper, rubber and pineapples.
• Sengkang was also known as “港脚”, meaning “foot of the port” as it was once the fishing port’s location along the Serangoon River. The river runs from near Tampines Road and passes through Hougang before being joined by Sungei Pinang in Sengkang.
• In 1994, the Housing & Development Board (HDB) developed Sengkang New Town with the theme, “Town of the Seafarer”. The names of many streets and common areas in Sengkang are related to the sea (e.g., Rivervale and Anchorvale) and agriculture (Palmvale and Cocovale).
• Sengkang is the first new town to have public transport amenities built in tandem with the public housing development. According to statistics from the HDB, Sengkang had 66,605 public flats in 2018, with an HDB resident population of approximately 212,100.

During the COVID-19 circuit breaker, two Sengkang residents bonded and became friends as they jammed to classic songs from their respective balconies. After their performance, neighbours burst into applause, bringing to mind the joyful kampung spirit of the past. (Lianhe Zaobao, 17/4/2020)
