  • 新加坡猫原名 “新加坡拉猫”（Singapura Cat），又名 “可亲它”，是马来语 kucinta 的音译。
  • 新加坡猫的来历至今仍存疑，但普遍认为该品种原产于新加坡。有说法称新加坡猫过去分布在新加坡的街头与沟渠里，因此也被称为 “阴沟猫”。
  • 到了 1970 年代，移居新加坡的梅多（Meadow）夫妇注意到新加坡猫独特的外形，并将其带去美国进行培育。
  • 新加坡猫体型虽然娇小，但却十分强健。它有着大耳大眼，眼睛带有绿色或金色。它的毛发顺滑贴服，象牙白的毛色带有棕色的斑纹。新加坡猫也非常聪明，性格活泼热情。
  • 1982 年，国际爱猫联合会（The International Cat Association）接受新加坡猫的注册，而新加坡猫于 1988 年参加冠军组比赛，被认可为纯种猫。
  • 1990 年，新加坡猫成为新加坡旅游促进局（Singapore Tourist Promotion Board）的吉祥物。在同年举办的 “新加坡河猫咪命名比赛”（Name the Singapore River Cats）中，Ang Lian Tin 女士获胜，从此新加坡猫有了别名 “可亲它”（Kucinta）。这个名字在马来文里一语双关，有 “吾爱吾猫” 和 “我们都爱猫” 的意思。

ETYMOLOGY
  • Formerly known in Mandarin as “新加坡拉猫”, the Singapura cat is also known in Mandarin as “可亲它”, which is a transliteration of the Malay term kucinta.
  • The origin of the Singapura cat is unclear, but it is commonly believed that this breed originated from Singapore. The Singapura cat is also known in Mandarin as “阴沟猫”, as it is believed that the cat used to be found in the streets and drains in Singapore. The term “阴沟猫” is made up of the words “阴沟” (drain) and “猫” (cat).
  • In the 1970s, the Meadow couple, who were expatriates in Singapore, noticed the unique appearance of the Singapura cats and brought them to the United States for breeding.
  • Although the Singapura cat is small-sized, it is very strong. It has big ears and eyes which are green or gold in colour. Its smooth coat is ivory in colour and has brown ticking. They are very smart, vivacious, and affectionate.
  • In 1982, the International Cat Association accepted the registration of the Singapura cat. In 1988, the Singapura cat took part in the championship competition and was accepted as a pure breed.
  • In 1990, the Singapura cat became the mascot of the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board. In the “Name the Singapore River Cats” competition held in the same year, Ms Ang Lian Tin won the competition and the Singapura cat was then nicknamed Kucinta. This name is a pun in Malay, meaning “I love my cat” and “we all love cats”.
  • Sculptures of the Singapura cat can still be found beside the Cavenagh Bridge along Singapore River, although some have been stolen or damaged.
