由来

福建话 gi oh kao 的意译。
所谓的 “义学” 是指创办于 1854 年的萃英书院。
厦门街建于 1830 年代。有说法认为其名称的由来是因为当时有大批的福建移民从厦门港口出航，抵新后便落户于此。
著名商人及慈善家陈金声连同其他侨领创办了萃英书院，是早期新加坡华人社会上以儒家思想为主的一座私塾。
萃英书院主要招收家境贫寒的男童，为贫困家庭提供免费教育，因此也称为义学。
由于萃英书院坐落于厦门街，该路段也俗称为 “义学口”。

ETYMOLOGY

The Mandarin term “义学口” is a paraphrase of the Hokkien term gi oh kao.
“义学” refers to Chui Eng Free School that was established in 1854.
Amoy Street was constructed in the 1830s. It is believed that Amoy Street got its name from the large number of Fujian immigrants who departed from Xiamen’s (formerly Amoy) harbour and later settled here after arriving in Singapore.
Renowned businessman and philanthropist Tan Kim Seng established Chui Eng Free School alongside several leaders from the local Chinese community. It was one of the earliest private schools in Singapore’s Chinese community that was based on Confucianism.
The student population of Chui Eng Free School mainly comprised male students from underprivileged backgrounds. As the school provided free education to needy families, it was also known as “义学” (charity school).
As Amoy Street was the location of Chui Eng Free School, it was also colloquially known as “义学口” (entrance of the charity school).
