The colloquial name of Boat Quay, located near the present Circular Road area.

由来

源自福建话或潮州话 zhap buay keng。
有说法认为驳船码头边早年有18间店屋，因此有“十八间”的代称。
驳船码头也俗称为“十三行”、“吊船码头”、“水厝尾”，以及“十八溪墘”。当中，“十八溪墘” 之称较为常用，而“溪墘”在福建话和潮州话中指“河边”。

ETYMOLOGY

The name originated from the Hokkien or Teochew term zhap buay keng.
It is believed that there were 18 shophouses along Boat Quay in the early days, leading to its alternative name of “十八间”, which is made up of the words “十八” (18) and “间” (a classifier used when referring to shops).
In addition to “十八间”, Boat Quay is also colloquially known as “十三行”, “吊船码头”, “水厝尾”, and “十八溪墘”. Among these, “十八溪墘” is more commonly used, with “溪墘” meaning “riverside” in Hokkien and Teochew.
