由来

“二十间”一词源自于福建话 ji zhap keng。
19世纪初的美芝路（Beach Road）一带属于临海地带，在新加坡城市规划图（Plan of the Town of Singapore）中被划分为欧洲人的住宅区。
由于当时该路段有20间欧洲人的临海豪华别墅，因此人们便把它称为“二十间”。
早期的美芝路与峇厘巷（Bali Lane）一带集中贩卖碗碟，因此人们也把该地段称为“二十间碗店口”。

ETYMOLOGY

The Mandarin term “二十间” originated from the Hokkien term ji zhap keng.
In the early 19th century, Beach Road ran by the sea and was designated as a residential area for Europeans in the Plan of the Town of Singapore.
As there were 20 European-owned coastal villas located along that stretch of land at the time, it was colloquially known as ji zhap keng (meaning “20 units” in Hokkien).
In the early days, crockery sellers gathered along Beach Road and Bali Lane, so the area also became known as “二十间碗店口”, with “碗店口” meaning “entrance of the crockery stores”.
