由来

“二十间” 一词源自于福建话 ji chap keng。
19 世纪初的美芝路（Beach Road）一代属于临海地段，在莱佛士市镇规划（Raffles Town Plan）中被划分为欧洲人的住宅区。
由于当时该路段有20间欧洲人的临海豪华别墅，因此人们便俗称之为 “二十间”。
早期的美芝路与峇厘巷（Bali Lane）一带集中贩卖碗碟，人们也因此俗称该地段为 “二十间碗店口”。

ETYMOLOGY

The Mandarin term “二十间” originated from the Hokkien term ji zhap keng.
In the early 19^th century, Beach Road was a coastal area and was designated as a residential area for Europeans in the Raffles Town Plan.
As there were 20 European-owned luxurious coastal villas located along that stretch of land at that time, it was colloquially known as dee zhap keng (meaning “20 units” in Hokkien).
In the early days, sellers of bowls and plates gathered along Beach Road and Bali Lane, so the area was also colloquially known as “二十间碗店口”.
