ETYMOLOGY
  • The term originated from the Hokkien (Minnan) dialect term po se tsua, which means birth certificate.
  • In Singapore, all newborns must be registered at gazetted birth registration centres. The registration can be done by either one or both of the child’s parents or by a proxy on behalf of the parents (they must possess a letter of authorisation from the parents). After registration, a birth certificate will be issued.
  • The registration of a birth should be done within 14 calendar days from the date of birth and no later than 42 days. One or both of the parents will have to submit a written letter and submit proof for the reason(s) for late registration if they fail to register within the stipulated time.
  • Singapore does not issue birth certificates for births that occur overseas.
