释义

名词

标明建筑物和住宅座号的牌子。

DEFINITION

Noun

A sign that displays the number of a building or housing block.

由来
  • 大牌主要用来指新加坡组屋座号的牌子。为了让人们即使在远处也能看清楚牌子上的号码,牌子和号码都非常大,因而得名。
  • 可指有成就或名望的专业人士,如“大牌律师”。也可指一个人骄傲、自满的个性,使他人感到不满,而称其为“大牌”。
ETYMOLOGY
  • A block number mainly refers to the signage used to display the number of a Housing Development Board (HDB) building in Singapore. In order to ensure that people can read the numbers on the signage from afar, its size and the numbers printed on it are quite big, hence it is known as “大牌” (literally translated as “big signboard”).
  • The term can also refer to successful or renowned professionals such as “大牌律师” (“famous lawyer”), and can also be used to describe arrogant or snobbish people who annoy others.
例句
有的居民则对大牌已换之事,浑然不知。在这里住了8年的颜女士(70岁)从记者口中听说此事时,感到非常意外。她说,她根本没注意到。对于组屋大牌为何要更换,也大感费解。(《联合晚报》,17/12/2008)
SAMPLE SENTENCE
Some residents were unaware of the changes in the block number. Mdm Gan, 70, who has stayed here for 8 years was shocked to hear this from the reporter. She said she did not notice it at all and found it hard to understand why the block number was being replaced. (Lianhe Wanbao, 17/12/2008)
