DEFINITION

Noun

A street originally located at the intersection of Victoria Street and Rochor Road.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Bugis Street was named after the Bugis people.
  • The Bugis are a subgroup of the Malay people. Since the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in Singapore, there have been approximately 500 Bugis people engaged in trade here.
  • The Bugis people mainly resided in Kampung Bugis, in the vicinity of Kampong Glam and Rochor River. Bugis Street was located within Kampung Bugis.
  • During the late 1980s, the original Bugis Street was demolished due to the implementation of the Urban Renewal Plan. In the mid-1990s, considering Bugis Street’s unique social and cultural significance, the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board decided to build a pedestrian street opposite the original Bugis Street, to restore the street’s former glory. Subsequently, the new pedestrian street was also named Bugis Street.
  • Bugis Junction, which has the largest indoor air-conditioned shopping street in Singapore, was built in 1996. There are a total of four shopping streets within the mall, with one of them built on Bugis Street’s original site.
  • As Bugis Street was a back alley in the 1950s, the place was poorly-lit. For this reason, the local Cantonese referred to Bugis Street colloquially as hak kai, which means “dark street”.
