  • Caning is a punishment under the British Penal Code, which was implemented locally as early as 1826 when Singapore was under the British Colonial rule. By 1872, the Penal Code was officially enacted under Singapore Law and Ordinances. Although the regulations have been adjusted accordingly over the years, the main punishments are still in force. Currently, the punishment is only imposed on male convicts between the ages of 16 to 50 and medically certified to be in a fit state of health.
  • Judicial caning is used in more than 35 offences, including violent crimes against others or crimes causing grievous hurt to the public, such as kidnapping, robbery and unlawful possession of weapons. Other caning offences include vandalism, drug trafficking, importation and illegal discharge of fireworks, illegal entry without visa, overstaying, conveying and hiring of illegal immigrants, etc.
