ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “朱古力” comes from the Cantonese transliteration of the English word “chocolate”.
  • The English word “chocolate” was originally translated to Mandarin as “巧克力”. Subsequently, under the influence of Cantonese movies, songs and popular culture from Hong Kong, the term “朱古力” began to appear frequently in the everyday speech of Singaporeans.
  • Chocolate is usually made from grinding the cocoa fruit into a fine powder and adding sugar and cream to it.
